According to the Manchester Evening News, the 23-year-old star, who is yet to make his United debut, has been added to the squad list on the club website ahead of the 2020/21 term.
Henderson has enjoyed three excellent seasons out on loan away from Old Trafford. The first with Shrewsbury Town, the second two with Sheffield United. Now, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a decision to make.
Last week, we covered a story from The Sun in which it was claimed that Dean Henderson was to ‘demand’ first-team football, or ask to leave Old Trafford. Whether that has any relevance here remains to be seen.
The MEN stress that during his loan spells, Henderson has remained listed as an U23 player. Now, though, his name is included with the first-team. This could potentially hint that Solskjaer plans to utilise the Englishman next season.
Competition is fierce. Solskjaer trusts David de Gea while Sergio Romero is probably the best back-up in football. Simply put, United cannot keep all three happy – so at least one has to go.
My personal view is that Henderson deserves his opportunity next term. De Gea hasn’t been good enough in this campaign, so perhaps if there’s a buyer, he should be sold and Romero kept as the back-up.
What I want and what I think will happen are two different things, mind. I can see Henderson going out on loan again, though I also expect Romero to leave – meaning Lee Grant could deputise for De Gea next term.
Either way, it’s going to be interesting to see how long Henderson remains patient. He does have a couple of years left on his contract so United aren’t in a mad-rush to decide.
