KENYAN TEACHERS COMPLAIN AFTER BEING EXPOSED TO A HARMFUL CHEMICAL DURING THE CHEMISTRY PRACTICAL (2019 KCSE)

Teachers took to social media on 09/11/2019 evening after usingĀ  Xylene which is a highly potent Organic substance.

in a post by one of the chemistry teachersĀ  they lamented of how the examination council exposed the teachers and students to the chemical without any safety measures. they posted some of the effects of Xylene and asked the examination council to also consider science teachers as part of the examination team or provide schools with tecnicians to prepare practicals for the students.

they argued that during practicals they are exposed to risks just like invigilators.

EFFECTS OF XYLENE

Breathing small amounts of xylene can cause.

  1. headaches
  2. dizziness
  3. drowsiness
  4. nausea.

when exposed to higher amounts of Xylene it can cause.

  • sleeplesness
  • stumbling
  • irregular heartbeat
  • fainting
  • death.

this is because it affects the cardiovascular system, respiratory system and kidney.
